The man wore a traditional fez, an eagle with a swastika prominently displayed on the front. His skin was dark, his hair black. On the collar patches of his tunic were two runes, the insignia of the SS. Everyone in Qantara knew him as Mustafa. He came from Kosovo. In 1944, they had picked him from the Muslim Handschar Division of the SS to be sent to Germany for special training. Few knew their way around explosives better than he. He was now the bomb maker in the camp. And the next target was a special one: the heart of the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem. Mustafa would build the bombs. British deserters would deliver them to the target.
Fritz Paulsen watched from his barrack as Mustafa loaded the explosives onto the stolen British truck. Here in Qantara, word of his own arrival had spread quickly—another SS officer joining the Arabs! They treated him with great respect everywhere. The camp commander had asked him to select the best of the volunteers and to form a special unit. Fritz had agreed, but he requested a little time. Right now, he needed to find out the exact destination for the bomb attack in Jerusalem. Then he would send Aaron Mehulem to warn the Haganah.
As Fritz stepped out in front of his barrack, Mustafa came up and planted himself before him.
“You’re the traitor,” he proclaimed. “The deserter they sent to Dachau. You’re him. Paulsen. I was there. Our SS commanders had us fall in and watch when they took you away, as a deterrence to us.”
Fritz felt a hard blow to his head. Everything went dark.
